Addition to the Historic Korn Residence
7704 Takoma Avenue
Takoma Park, Maryland
History and Description of the Project
This project is a small respectful addition to a 1901 Victorian residence. The program includes an improved kitchen, an informal dining area, and a comfortable living space for a growing family of five and their friends, with thoughtful connections between the interior spaces and the surrounding gardens. The project is organized around a new “second front door” and entry hall for the family’s daily use on the side of the house in the area that forms a hyphen in the massing between old and new. This single-story addition is comprised of a new kitchen, family room, and breakfast room spaces that are open to one another yet subtly subdivided. The kitchen and family room are housed within a new gabled structure that was designed to appear as a detached summer kitchen when viewed obliquely from the street. The shed dormers that open onto this space provide additional natural light from above. The breakfast room sits within an enclosed portion of the new rear porch built on the back of the family room. While the exterior of the project is intentionally respectful of the historic residence and neighborhood, the new interiors are intentionally open, light, airy, and lighthearted as a counterpoint to the Victorian spaces in the original portions of the house. Interior finishes include reclaimed pine flooring over a hydronic in-floor heating system and concrete countertops and fireplace surround. |
