Renovation of the Toppenberg Residence
5 Oxford Street
Chevy Chase, Maryland 20815

History and Description of the Project

The owners of this 1903 Dutch Colonial Revival had just moved into the home and quickly realized that the first floor spaces were not conducive to their lifestyle. The outdated kitchen seemed isolated. The kitchen window looked directly into a neighbor’s window. The dining room seemed too large. The family room was too tight. The first floor powder room opened directly onto the living spaces. They did not need more space; they simply wanted to make better use of the space they had.

The design strategy for this renovation included: 1) Creating a large opening between the kitchen and the other entertaining spaces, 2) Reconfiguring the kitchen windows to bring light through new glass-front wall cabinets, 3) Switching the functions of the dining room and family room spaces, and 4) Relocating the door to the powder room to allow for an increased sense of separation and privacy.
