Renovation and Addition to the Brown Residence
2391 North Danville Street
Arlington, Virginia 22207

History and Description of the Project

The owners of this 1924 two-story stuccoed farmhouse realized that their growing family required a bit more space than the historic home offered. Their goal was to expand the house by renovating the small outdated kitchen, adding a new family room adjacent to the kitchen, adding a new second floor master bedroom suite, and by making inviting connections between the interior living spaces and the rear yard. During the schematic design phase of the project it also became clear that Mr. Brown also very much wanted a space where an inherited billiard table could be appropriately placed and enjoyed. Just as important as the new spaces they desired, the Browns wanted to make sure that any addition to their beloved home would be thoughtfully designed to respect the simple nature of the original house, and the neighborhood.

This addition/renovation accomplished these goals by creating a seamless addition using the original exterior materials of rusticated block, cement stucco, and cedar shingle siding. The interior of the addition however was designed to place a comfortable but decidedly more modern edge on the spaces.
